We have recently gone beyond the vicinity of the Zamboaguita poblacion to target outlying vulnerable communities of our parish. Once a week or whenever possible, we feed Lumad children who regularly come down from Balaudo, a village that straddles the mountainous forested border of Bukidnon and Agusan del Sur. When food is scarce, their parents hire themselves out to local farm owners. Unfortunately recent harvests have been sparse or erratic, thus they often times have next to nothing to eat.
We drive on our pickup truck loaded with food prepared for the day to outlying sitios where there are concentrations of undernourished kids. Because of our limited resources, we tend to prioritize Lumad kids over others who are not marginalized. While we cater primarily to 50 neediest children, there are days when their number balloons to about 100-150. They come eagerly waiting with their mugs and bowls ready to partake of the food we have brought.
Our Parish and Indigenous Peoples Ministry programs also need financial support for: (a) scholarship for deserving high school students; (b) repair of chapels in outlying areas; (c) its formation programs for Catechists, Youth, Parish Workers’ Retreat, Lay Ministers.
Zamboanguita is a rural barangay of Malaybalay City, farthest from the city center and located on a fertile valley between the upper region of the Pulangi River and the forestlands of Mt. Pantaron. It is bounded to the north by barangay Saint Peter, to the east by the town of La Paz, Agusan del Sur separated by the Pantaron Range, to the south by barangay Indalasa and to the west by barangay Caburacanan and Mapulo separated by the Pulangi River. It has a population of 1,765 (2020 census) and includes indigenous peoples of Pulangiyen and Higaonon ethnicity. The local roadways are accessible by jeepneys, small buses, and motorcycles, but the hinterlands can be reached only on foot. Primarily agricultural with a flourishing commercial activity, it has two sitios: Malilong and Kinuaw.
